Information Marketing: 4 Steps that Will Turn Your Skills into Your Primary Business

Most people who have knowledge and experience in a field think they have to write a book in order to make a living by sharing what they know. They assume that royalties from that book will be the answer to all of their financial needs. However, the truth is that royalties range from 8% to 12% of the wholesale price. That translates into $.25 to $1.00 per book. Most books sell less than 5,000 copies. If you do the math you'll see that it's just about impossible to quit your day job and live off the income from a print book.

Besides, how many books can you write in a year? Not many.

But in this world of Web 2.0 there is good news for those of us who make our living from passing along our expertise and ideas. This is a world of direct information exchange... no printing costs, no postage rates, and no expensive publicity campaigns. Internet reports can sell for $7.00-$97.00 each. Quality ebooks go as high as $297.00 per download.

Here are four steps that will grow your reputation as an expert and build your information business into a primary means of supporting your family, and doing it better than ever before:

1. Be decisive. The first step, of course, is to make that all important decision that you are going to step out of the herd. Small business culture dictates that we all follow a certain pattern—develop an idea, create a product or service, rent offices and buildings, and pay, pay, pay, pay, pay—for publicity, for employees, for product, for displays, for three kinds of insurance, and on and on. This is a very expensive way to run a business. It's time to think in terms of what you know instead of what you do. Go directly to the people who want and need your information. Until you decide to step out of the crowd, nothing will change for you.

2. Engage a system. When learning all of the options available on the Internet today, it's easy to get distracted and focus on one or two communication methods when a system is what you need. This is a program that can be repeated month by month. A system will produce a steady growth in the size of your mailing list, in your inventory of information products, and in your sales. Take time to define the tasks you need to do daily, weekly, and monthly. Make a plan and a daily schedule. In order to succeed as an information entrepreneur, you'll need to treat your information business in a businesslike manner.

3. Harness the power of a Team of Experts. Another advantage of this Internet age is the proliferation of skilled and motivated virtual assistants. Every aspect of your information business has a learning curve. Some of these you will master quickly because they are very techno-friendly such as blogging, but other areas such as web design, podcasting, or transcription may seem daunting. When you feel overwhelmed by all of the tasks that need to be done in order to maintain your system, call in the troops. A good VA will more than pay for the fees she may require.

4. Create and maintain momentum. Any politician will tell you that momentum is critical to winning a race. This is especially true in the Internet world. Building momentum in any arena takes hard work and energy, but once the ball is rolling you can build speed with much less effort. This translates into a continuous connection with your clients, continuous product development, and continuous focus on list building strategies. If your information is good, your list will share what you offer with their colleagues and friends your momentum will grow naturally.
